If you’re a small business owner, it may seem counterintuitive to focus on expansion instead of contraction right now, but Konigsberg advises that it is exactly what entrepreneurs must do. Use this time wisely to be more active on social media, revamp your website, post a pop-up on your website with an informative status, call your current and previous customers/clients to inquire about their wellbeing, and ask for reviews.
Sound crazy? Consider the following:
- Google searches are up over 50%
- Facebook usage is up over 70%
- Email Opens are way up
- Online purchases are through the roof
Depending on the nature of your business, you may be working remotely, shut down completely, or open for emergencies (in the case of a dental office, for example). The last thing you want to do is go silent. Use this time to remain top-of-mind for your prospects and existing customers/clients.
In terms of reviews, Facebook continues to post them while Google and Yelp have suspended the posting of public reviews. On March 20, 2020, Google My Business announced, “There will be ‘temporary limitations and delays in support as we prioritize critical services,” in response to the Coronavirus situation.
Google is allowing people to write reviews; they just aren’t posting them until further notice. Why? First, Google is short-staffed due to the Coronavirus; and second, they’ve noticed a significant uptick in 1-star reviews that complain about a business being closed, or accuse a business of spreading the virus. We are all dealing with this crisis…and it’s unfair for millions of businesses across the country to see their reputations tarnished. To prevent that from happening, Google made the decision to suspend reviews, review responses, and Q&A until further notice. However, asking your customers/clients for reviews now will ensure that when COVID19 passes – and it will – your business is primed for even greater success.
